Madiba

On 18 July 2013 Elphin Lodge and Ron Smith Care Centre celebrated the birthday of a living legend, Nelson Mandela.
Delicious birthday cake with all 95 candles!

A special table for our honoured guests from the Selwyn Segal Centre.

The dining hall at Ron Smith Care Centre filled to capacity. A great turnout to honour Tata!

Entertainment provided by the Selwyn Segal Cultural Group.

Staff in their traditional dress.

Chocolate Truffle-making

In a recent Friday baking session we tried our hands at the art of making chocolate truffles. What a delicious morning it was! As the saying goes, "Chocolate doesn’t make the world go round, but it sure does make the trip worthwhile!"
Marjorie Gittings did not mind getting her hands dirty!

Extremely delicate work moulding your truffles, as demonstrated by Fred Deysel.

Kathleen Cronning opting for a glossy finish on her truffles.

Rob "sweet tooth" Wilson.

Paws for People

The Paws for People team visits Ron Smith Care Centre every second Wednesday of the month. Their visit is always the highlight of our week!
They have a mission to bring together dogs and people in a warm, non-threatening manner, allowing them to interact positively through use of a controlled and friendly approach.

Kathleen Cronning deep in conversation with Heidi.

A drink and a nap with William Whitecross.

EVERYONE enjoying the movie!

Lights, camera, action ....

It was lights, camera, action at Ron Smith Care Centre and Rand Aid retirement villages Elphin Lodge and Inyoni Creek on June 18 and 19, after the complexes were chosen as locations for a South African film due to be released early next year. Pad na jou Hart stars screen legend Marius Weyers, Ivan Botha and Donnalee Roberts (7de Laan fame), Rina Nienaber (Heidi in Skwizas) and husband and wife duo Johan and Lida Botha (known for their roles in kykNET’s Oupa en Ouma Sit op die Stoep)

The Film Factory production explores humanity, love and the things that really make life worthwhile.

The Rand Aid facilities were chosen because of their warm, cared-for atmosphere and there was much excitement as the cameras, lights and props were unpacked and the friendly cast arrived.

Home Sweet Home...

"One may make their house a palace of sham, or they can make it a home, a refuge."
Mark Twain

What better way to make a place feel more homely than the smell of freshly baked bread and a pot of filter coffee?
Undoubtedly two of the greatest inventions!

 The new breadmachine in action...

Coffee anyone... no instant coffee for me anymore, says Peter Barker.

Peter Smith: "You can't get fresher than this."
Yummmmmm... Ivan Langford enjoying the steaming bread with butter melting away.

Is that your second slice, Maud Davidson?
Nothing like the first morning coffee to put a smile on your face, as illustreated by Beryl May and Brian Dyke.

Fruit, flowers and creativity...

Despite the season changing and colours fading, the colours and smells in OT will NEVER FADE. Our beautiful residents recently had the chance to be creative with flower arranging and making fresh fruit salad (I can assure you no canned products were used!). As you will see from the pictures, we have very creative people among us!

Beryl Moll and Johanna sharing a delicious fruit salad - see they even found space for a winter melon in there!

John Lee basking in fruit salad glory.

Cecily Ryder and Esther Rohald share a joke over some fresh guava.

Anna Marks and Liba Chromy did not have time for talking...

Betty Haughton made short work of the paw paw.

Sisters Shirley (left) and Eva (right) with assistance from Mabel (middle) came up with this wonderful creation.

Marjorie Gittings having fun... plain and simple!
Helen Viljoen and Ivan Langenstrass sharing a joke whilst waiting for the activity to start.
Lorna Smith (back left) and Liba Chromy (front) concentrating on the finishing touches and Cecily Ryder (back right) raring to go.
